This study was performed to make clear the relationship between protein patterns and involution of the uterus by analysing the protein composition of uterine flushings collected from postpartum cows.
The flushing samples, collected repeatedly at 2-3 days intervals from postpartum cows, were cen-trifuged and concentrated by ultrafiltration prior to analysis. Ion exchange chromatography with DEAE-Sephadex was used to fractionate the proteins in the flushings. Protein concentration was determined by UV absorption.
It was clarified from the chromatogram obtained by the ion exchange chromatography that the uterine flushings collected from day 6 to 13 postpartum cows contained a major fraction (I), which corresponded to the fraction I in the pooled blood plasma, and several minors. After day 15 the relative amount of fraction I in the flushings decreased progressively. An elution pattern of the plasma was different from that of uterine flushings. Relative amount of the slow eluting fractions, which were assigned to fraction II, III and IV, in the plasma was larger than those found in the flushings. A linear relationship was observed between the relative amount of fraction I in the uter-ine flushings and the progress of postpartum days. There was no significant difference in the days required for the recurrence of postpartum estrus between experimental and control groups.
