Description

Aluminum alloys containing magnesium 2 to 12% gain weight during melting at 750°C for 180min in the air-15%CO2 mixture less than in air. The fact may be caused not by decrease in O2 partial pressure in the atmosphere but by an oxidation inhibition effect of CO2. When the Al-10%Mg alloy is melted in the air containing various concentrations of CO2 at 700° to 850°C, the oxidation inhibition effect of CO2 is related to the stable period observed after surface film formation in an early stage of holding. The stable period is prolonged in the air containing higher concentration of CO2 at a constant temperature, and is shortened at elevated temperatures. Both high purity and commercial purity CO2 in the atmosphere reduce the oxide on the Al-10%Mg alloy melted at 750°C.
