Abstract

Studies on the teeth of pisces can be found frequently in the literatures. However, most of which deals with a limited number of particular species, and the informations concerning the wide varieties of them are scarcely available. The authors studied macroscopically the teeth of the adult pisces of 81 varieties in 51 species which were obtained in the coast of Kyushu, and comparison between each species was made on the type of tooth distribution, the contour of a tooth group, the tooth number and the tooth form. The classification in the present study is based on the 3rd edition of Japanese Faunae Diagrams of Seinosuke Uchida and others (1950) as well as Grand Color Diagrams of Animals of the World published by Ikuma Onoda and Katsuzo Onoda (1943) I The tooth distribution. O. Hertwig, in his observation on a number of shark (Notidamiden, Acanthias and Raja) confirmed the occurrence of tooth group everywhere on the wall lining mouth (1874). R. Bruckhardt observed the tooth group on branchia of the same fish (1906). Hofer, in his study of teleostei, described that all the bones facing the mouth and the pharynx except the os sphenoidale were changed into teeth or tooth-like tubercles.
