Ca contents of blood serum, urine and resting or stimulated saliva from parotid of a patient with severe calculus deposition and periodontal disease were determined, and a positive relation to high Ca content of the patient's drinking water was confirmed. The values obtained were 10.6 mg/dl in the serum of the patient, 9.8 and 9.6 mg/dl in the serum of the control subjects, 9.48 mg/dl in the patient's domestic water, the amount 2 or 3 fold higher than those found in the usual domestic water. In parallel therewith, totally 53 determinations were consecutively performed on the Ca contents of stimulated salivas from the parotids of 2 non-periodontal subjects for the period of 20 days, in the midst of which Ca lactate and vitamin D were administered. The Ca contents of the salivas in both subjects were found to increase after the Ca administration. Hard water may be responsible for high Ca concentration of the saliva and may play a role in depositing dental calculus, but the saliva alkalinity induced locally or systemically may be a major contributing factor.
