Description
Large boulders and other debris from the disintegration of the rock mass may fall or slide from the valley sides and deposit across the valley. Such deposits frequently dam the waters of the valley and creat a lake. When such a obstruction is broken down by the accumulated pressure due to the great depth of water, a bore may be formed and move rapidly down the valley. The bore beats against dams. The dynamic force exerted by a bore upon a dam is discussed in this paper.
(1) A prismatic channel is assumed. Supposing that the width of the dam crest is the same as that of the channel of approach, all calculations are based upon a section 1 meter long (perpendicular to the plane of Fig. 2).
Referring to Fig. 2, the dynamic pressure acting on the dam is expressed as
_??_ …………………………………(1)
where w=the specific weight of water
g=the acceleration of gravity
_??_………………………………………………(2)
The numerical values of Ho and hA can be obtained by solving the simultaneous equations (3) and (4)
_??_ ………………………………………………………(3)
_??_ …………………………………………………………(4)
(2) At the very instant that the head of the bore with a velocity of Vw strikes a dam (Fig. 3), the dam undergoes a tremendous force.
The impulsive force exerted by the head of the bore upon the dam may be given by
_??_ ………………………………………………………………………(5)
where p=the intensity of impulsive force per square meter
_??_ ……………………………………………………(6)
A=water area of flow
H=the depth of the centroid of flow section
