Abstract
The physical and chemical properties of organic substrates that are available in the tropical zone such as coconut coir (CC), rice husk (RH), rice husk charcoal (RHC), peanut husk charcoal (PHC), bagasse charcoal (BGC) and peat moss (PM) were investigated. The substrates could be divided into two groups according to their water-holding capacity; 1) the high water-holding capacity group; PM (55.6%), CC (53.8%), RHC (55.8%) and BGC (48.3%) and 2) the low water-holding capacity group; RH (17.5 %) and PHC (32.1%) . Thus, two groups of substrates were mixed at 1: 1 ratio (v/v) . Bulk density of the mixture ranged from 109-123 mg⋅cm-3. Water-holding capacity and air porosity ranged from 48-56 and 26-36% v/v, respectively. The pH values of the RHC: PHC, BGC: RH and BGC: PHC mixed substrates were alkaline. The EC values of the PM: PHC, RHC: RH and BGC: RH mixed substrates showed an acceptable level (0.4-1.0 dS⋅m-1) . The concentration of NO3-N, Ca and Mg of all the mixed substrates were low, while the PO4-P and K concentrations were high. The mixed substrates containing CC had a high Na concentration. The physical properties of all the mixed organic substrates were in the acceptable range for use for transplant production. The substrates that were found to be suitable for use as growing media in the tropical zone were stable and low-cost materials.
