Description

In 1974, Picea abies affected by Atropetlis treleasei was first found in Hokkaido, Japan. P. abies stands planted in 1928, 1930 and 1931 were affected. Most of cankerswere recognized on trunks and a few of them on twigs. Thinning of sup-pressed and inferior formed trees was made in 1973, but about 85%of plantedtrees were affected. In the field observations at the natural forest, the cankerswere fomd On branches of Picea jezoensis. Therefore, the fungus causing cankersof planted P. abies may be originated from the natural forest of P. jezoensis.
