An assessment of production strategies suitable for beef cattle production in Malaysia was conducted using a general simulation model. In the present study, the effects of breeding systems and marketing strategies on biological efficiencies were investigated using two breeding systems such as a Kedah-Kelantan pure-breeding system (KK system) and a KK with Brahman cross-breeding system (KK-BK system), and three levels of bull market weights (200, 250 and 300 kg) . The input variables such as genetic potential, nutrient levels and management options were set, based on literature values for beef production in Malaysia. In addition, since the maintenance requirement of the KK breed was comparatively higher than that of other breeds, the equation for estimating the maintenance requirement in the KK breed was opplied in the present model. The two biological efficiencies used as indices included kg of total sale weight of calves/MJ of total feed metabolizable energy intake (E1) and kg of total sale weight of calves and culled cows/MJ of total feed metabolizable energy intake (E2) .<BR>Both E1 and E2 in the KK-BK system were higher than those in the KK system at all levels of market weights (WM) . In the KK system, E1 increased but E2 decreased, as WM increased. In the KK-BR system, E2 increased with increasing WM, but the highest E2 was obtained at a WM of about 250kg. The present study demonstrated the potential contribution of systems analysis as a research tool for evaluating beef cattle production systems in developing areas.
