Abstract

Butt-rot in old-aged Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi (LAMB.) CARR.) forests at the foot of the northern side of Mt. Fuji was investigated. The relationships among the basal butt-rot diameters, the heights of butt-rot, and the volumes of butt-rot first were investigated using 84 larch trees with butt-rot. The following equations were obtained: height of rot =0.388+6.90× basal butt-rot diameter; volume of rot=-1.90×10-3+0.848×basal butt-rot area. The state of damage by butt-rot was investigated in 23 larch forests, and the proportion of infected trees averaged 23.4% (ranging 3.6_??_61.0%). The volume of butt-rotted wood was calculated from basal butt-rot diameters measured using the above equations. The volume of butt-rot was an average of 0.898m3 per 100 trees (ranging 0.135_??_2.294 m3). The results of fungal isolation showed that Phaeolus scheweinitzii (FR.) PAT. is the main pathogen in the area. The age of the forest and the gradient of the land have influences on the damages to larch trees by butt-rot (Volume of rot=-1.02+0.0292×age; Volume of rot =2.12-0.169×gradient). Soil conditions also seemed to affect the damage. These are useful for estimating butt-rot volume in old-aged forests operated on long rotations.
