Abstract

The vegetative transition on the young Cryptomeria forest was investigated in Iwate Pref., where Cryptomeria was planted every year from 1964 to 1972, after Pinus densiflora was cut. The forest was weeded twice yearly in the first and second years, and yearly in the third and fourth years. Sasa (Sasa paniculata) -vegetation was killed by logging of P. densiflora, and then weed-vegetation began to cover the ground in the first year. In the second year, primary herbs, bracken and vines started to grow, and Sasa grew back mixed with other plants. From the third year, the weed-vegetation was dwarfed under the shade of Cryptomeria. In the fourth year, the weight of vegetation reached the maximum. However, the shade of Cryptomeria caused the tendency for weight to decrease from the fifth year. After six years, almost all herbs were dead and the ground was covered by Sasa. By the ninth year, the form of productive structure was almost the same as before cutting.
