Description

Diseased leaves of host plant, Cryptomeria japonica D. DON., collected immediately after over-wintering in a nursery, were kept in] moist conditions at different temperatures, then conidial production on the leaves was surveyed. At 10°C, new conidiophores and conidia were produced within 24 and 48 hours, respectively, after settling of the leaves. Between 15° and 20°C, these fruit bodies were both produced within 24 hours. Between 20° and 30°C, they were produced within 6 and 12 hours, respectively. Diseased leaves of the host plant, collected in warm seasons were brought into moist conditions at different temperatures. After conidia of the fungus were produced, these leaves were washed with water, then reproduction of the conidia at test temperatures was surveyed. Conidia were reproduced between 5° and 30°C, but not at 3°C. At 5°, 10°, 15° and 20_??_30°C, conidia were reproduced within 48, 20, 10 and 5 hours, respectively. Abnormal-form (dauer-form) of the conidia was produced abundantly at low temperatures (5_??_15°C), but only slightly at higher temperatures (20_??_30°C). At each test temperature, the ratio of abnormalform to normal-form increased in accordance with the length of days kept. The majority of normal-forms produced at low temperatures were lighter coloured, less septated and more poorly spinulated, with wide and flat bottoms.
