Description
Root formation of poplar green shoot cuttings was studied in relation to internal factors (number of leaves, fresh weight, and length of cuttings) and external factors (IAA, sucrose, and light). (1) Root formation was greatly dependent on the amount of stocked materials. Root formation of cuttings in the light was more active than that in the dark, but the lag period for root production was not changed either in the light or dark. Decapitation had little effect on root formation, while defoliation inhibited it significantly. Intact and decapitated cuttings formed roots even in the dark. (2) Root formation was also promoted with the duration of the presence of leaves and with the dipping duration in IAA-sucrose solution. These results also suggest the importance of the amount of stocked materials in cuttings. With the increase in the duration, the amount of stocked materials may accumulate and stimulate the growth of protruded roots. Furthermore, IAA is another important factor for root formation in poplar cuttings. In the absence of IAA, 7.0cm cuttings formed root while 3.5cm cuttings did not. Application of IAA promoted root formation of both cuttings. (3) With all sucrose concentrations, cuttings without leaves and buds formed roots in the presence of IAA. The optimal concentration of sucrose was about 2.0%. In the absence of IAA, no root formed in any sucrose concentration. These results suggest that the promoting effect of leaves on root formation is partly replaced by the combined effect of IAA and sucrose, and the effect results from the supply of materials stocked in the cutting.
