Abstract

The conditions suitable for germination and establishment of Cercidiphyllum japonicum seedlings were compared with those of coexisting species, Fraxinus platypoda and Pterocarya rhoifolia, in the riparian forest of central Japan. C. japonicum is adapted to germinate in the soil without litter, because 1) the seedlings germinating in the gravel and litter are not able to reach the open air due to their small size of seeds and seedlings, and 2) the seeds and/or seedlings deposited in gravel would dry out due to the severe change from humid and dry situations. On the other hand, F. platypoda and P. rhoifolia could grow on gravel covered with litter, because their seed and seedling size are large enough to passage through the litter layer and to reach their root into the ground where the water condition is suitable for their establishment. Relative irradiance at the site of surviving C. japonicum seedlings is almost the same as that of P. rhoifolia (about 1520%), and higher than that of F. platypoda (510%). In a large gap, however, heavy rainfall would wash away C. japonicum seedlings easily. Therefore, the seedling regeneration of C. japonicum will be difficult compared with that of F. platypoda and P. rhoifolia.
