Description

Use rates of nestboxes and the effect of nestbox placing were investigated in different types of forest in southern Izu Peninsula and in Miyake island of the Izu island chain. Nestboxes were placed at 40 or 20m intervals. Species using nestboxes were the Great Tit, Parus major, and the Varied Tit, P. varius. Most Great Tits used nestboxes in secondary forests, while Varied Tits used nestboxes in broad-leaved evergreen forests as well as those in secondary forests. In the secondary forest of Izu and Miyake and in the immature broad-leaved evergreen forest of Izu, almost all the breeding pairs of both species used nestboxes, whereas in the mature broad-leaved evergreen forest of Miyake, only one-third to one-half of the breeding pairs of Varied Tits used the nestboxes. Breeding densities in forests with nestboxes were higher than those in forests without nestboxes, except in the mature broad-leaved evergreen forest of Miyake. From these results, it appeared more effective to place nestboxes in immature forests than in mature forests where there are many natural holes for nesting.
