Abstract

Studies have been made on influence of varying light intensity on height, density, biomass, and leaf area of Sasa nipponica at three places. At open plots, height, density, biomass, and specific leaf area fell in range of 1.1_??_1.4m, 200_??_500culm/m2, 470_??_1, 250g/m2, and 170_??_220cm2/g, respectively. Height, density, and values of biomass in leaves and in culms decreased with the degree of darkness in forests. Relative light intensities at which these values were reduced by half were 5_??_10% for height and density, and about 20% for leaf and culm biomass. On the contrary, leaves tended to become thin with decreasing light intensity.
