Description

Thinning effect is defined as producing more trees of a certain desirable size class by thinning than those resulting from the absence of thinning. For analyzing the thinning effect, it is necessary to know not only the mean diameter of the stand but also the partial population whose diameters are larger than a given diameter class within the stand. The thinning effect can be analyzed successfully by comparing the Y-N curve of the thinned plot with that of the unthinned plot by utilizing the yield prediction method of the yield-density diagram since the values of the partial population as well as of the total stand are recognized synthetically by this method. This method was applied to a natural deciduous hardwood stand and to an artificial todo-fir (Abies sachalinensis) stand. The thinning effects were observed in the two stands.
