The effect of the needle blight caused by Chloroscypha seaveri (REHM) SEAVER on the height and the diameter breast height (DBH) growth of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. DON) was studied in two stands of the Kesennuma National Forest in Miyagi Prefecture where the disease had occurred for eight years. In the stand of 16-year-old trees, the average annual height growth of heavily diseased trees decreased to one-third of that of healthy trees during the eight years of the ravaging of the disease. The average annual DBH growth of heavily diseased trees decreased to one-half to one-third of that of healthy trees. In the stand of 7-year-old trees, the height of heavily diseased trees was significantly shorter than that of slightly and moderately affected trees (p<0. 05). On the average, the difference in height among them was 50 cm. A significant reduction of the growth of DBH was recognized in heavily affected trees.
