To determine the inheritance of flowering characteristics of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. DON), four-year-old rooted cuttings (parents and F1) and seedlings (F2) from the parent trees of two cultivars of sugi, Kumotooshi and Okinoyama-sugi. were examined. A concentration of 100 ppm of gibberellin solution was sprayed on them twice, 22 July and 1 August, 1985. In November, 1985, the following six variables, which were graded at five levels, were measured by eye: 1) number of male flower, 2) number of female flower, 3) pattern of male flower distribution in crowns, 4) pattern of female flower distribution in crowns, 5) shape of crown, and 6) height of tree. Then, six variables and four variables (excluding shape of crown and height of tree) were analyzed by a principal component analysis. In the histogram of component scores, bimodal features emphasized non-normality of this distribution. The results indicated that inheritance of both male and female flowering were not controlled by poly-genes, but were controlled by a few genes.
