Abstract

Anexperiment on cattle grazing in a man-made forest was conducted for 14 years. The study site was a 5.21 ha todomatsu (Abies sachalinensis MAST.) plantation located near Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. Tree growth of grazed plot was superior to that on the ungrazed ones because of the stimulating effects of the cattle manure on tree growth on the former. The understory of the stand consisted of fodder grass, mainly Dactylis glomerata and Poa pratensis, and yielded about 12 ton/ha. Grazing was estimated to be about 100 cow-day/ha for a year. Adverse effects of grazing appeared in the early stages of the planted trees. The grazing damage was due to grazing pressure. Therefore to avoid these bad effects, grazing intensity should be kept at a moderate rate during the early tree growing stage. This paper reports on the practically of animal grazing in todomatsu forests.
