The organic substrates, divided into two groups according to water-holding capacity; 1) the high water-holding capacity group (>45% v/v) ; coconut coir (CC), rice husk charcoal (RHC), bagasse charcoal (BGC) and PM (peat moss), and 2) the low water-holding capacity group (<45% v/v) ; rice husk (RH) and peanut husk charcoal (PHC), were mixed at a ratio of 1: 1 (v/v) ; CC: RH, CC: PHC, RHC: RH, RHC: PHC, BGC: RH, BGC: PHC, PM: RH and PM: PHC, and their potential for transplant production of chili and cucumber was compared with that of commercial growing media (COM) . The values of the shoot diameter, shoot length, leaf area, shoot and total dry weight of the chili transplants grown in the CC: RH and CC: PHC mixtures were higher than those of the transplants grown in other mixed substrates. In addition, the values of the growth parameters of chili transplants grown in the substrates containing CC were equal to or higher than those of the transplants grown in the substrates containing PM and in COM at the last sampling stage. The cucumber transplants grown in the substrates containing PHC showed higher values for the shoot diameter and length, leaf area, shoot and total dry weights than those of the transplants grown in the substrates containing RH. The values of the growth parameters from of the transplants grown in the substrates containing CC were similar to those of the transplants grown in the substrates containing PM at the last sampling stage. In conclusion, the growth of the transplants of both vegetables did not show any visible difference among the prepared substrates. Due to the low price and availability in tropical zones, the organic substrates containing CC showed a potential for use as alternative media to peat moss-based medium for chili and cucumber transplant production.
