Abstract

Three theoretical growth equations, the MITSCHERLICH, the Logistic, and the GOMPERTZ were applied to the observed radial stem-growth of 349 individual jack pine trees (Pinus banksiana LAMB.), a representative shade-intolerant pioneer species, to check their theoretical validity, goodness of fit, and ease of fitting. It turned out that the MITSCHERLICH was best, whereas the Logistic was worst with the GOMPERTZ between in every criterion. Being basically the same result as obtained in the preceding report (I) with shadetolerant white spruce (Picea glauca (MOENCH)VOSS), this result represented respective adequacies of the three growth equations. Thus the tentative conclusion was drawn that the MITSCHERLICH would be the best for describing radial stemgrowth of trees from both the theoretical and practical points of view.
