Abstract

Bolts (length 15 cm) of the Japanese cedar, Cryptomeria japonica D. Don were inoculated with the cryptomeria bark borer, Semanotus japonicus Lacordaire (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). The bolts were placed in a room maintained at 25°C with a photoperiod of 16 L 8 D for 120 or 140 days. The bolts in which adults stayed were exposed to low temperatures (7 or 15°C) for 40120 days to terminate the adult diapause. After being returned to the previous conditions (25°C 16 L 8 D), adult emergence from bolts, life spans, fecundity, and hatchabilities of eggs were investigated. The number of adults emerging corresponded to 65.6% of the inoculated hatchlings in total. Adult emergence was observed in all low temperature treatments. As the period of low temperature treatment grew longer, the time taken for adults to emerge after replacement of bolts to warm conditions became shorter and the hatchabilities were high. It was desirable for the termination of the adult diapause that bolts were exposed to 7°C for 90 days, because after this treatment adults emerged synchronously and hatchability was high.
