Abstract

A growth model for stand volume is derived using a volume equation to connect the growth models for basal area and average height already developed. This leads to the completion of a system of growth models which describe the development of even-aged pure stands in terms of entire stand and the average size of trees. To obtain the volume equa-tion, stem volume is treated as consisting of two parts divided at breast height. Because this volume equation applies to individual stems, the problems that arise in applying it to total or average basal area and average height to estimate stand volume is discussed. Except for young stands, the volume equation gives fairly correct stand volume, even if it is applied to total basal area and average height. The applicability of the system of growth models to actual stand growth is demon-strated using data from hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa S. et Z.) permanent sample plots of different thinning intensities.
