Dauerlarvae of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus were recovered from six populations of adult Monochanaus saltuarius emerging from Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora SIEB. et ZUCC.) logs inoculated with the nematodes and from snow-broken trees in infected forest. The frequency of insects containing nematodes ranged from 12. 5 to 95.0%, and the average number of nematodes per insect ranged from less than 1 to 9, 284. Eight of 30 Japanese red pine seedlings died in a cage in which 50 M. saltuarius adults containing B. xylophilus were released. Six of the dead seedlings yielded B. xylophilus. These results indicate that M. saltuarius transmits B. xylophilus to healthy pine tree.
