Abstract

Comparisons of the carbon cycles of two different soils were made on a slope in a deciduous broadleaved forest in Kyoto Prefecture. Plots were established in the upper part (N5) of a dry brown forest-soil (BB) and in the lower part (N7) of a moderately-moist brown forest-soil (BD). Soil res-piration rates of soil systems with and without A0 layers were measured in 1978_??_1980, using the alkali absorption method. Seasonal changing of soil respiration rates followed that of soil temperature. There were highly significant exponential correlations between soil respiration rates and soil temperatures during the three years on both plots. Whether an A0 layer existed or not, Q10 values were 2.33 and 1.85 in N 5 and N7, respectively. We think this difference in Q10 values was caused by the differences in the biomass of fine roots, root respiration rates, qualities of soil organic matter, and so forth.
