Abstract
Emergence of“upper roots”from a certain node of elongated culm under water was roughly synchronized with the leaf-emergence from the upper fourth (or fifth) node, while emergence of“lower roots”emerged with that from the upper second (or third) node. In each node, the number of the upper roots was fewer than that of the lower roots. The upper roots had larger root diameter with about four large metaxylems, whereas the lower roots had smaller root diameter with about only one metaxylem.
