Abstract

Liquid, gas and ion nitriding processes have been succesfully used to improve the tool life.<br>This report was discussed about the foundamental problem of nitriding and the practical nitriding condition of tool steel.<br>The main subjects of this roport are as follows:<br>(1) Fe-N binary and Fe-N-C ternary diagrams.<br>(2) Decomposition of ε and γ iron nitrides by reheating at 600∼900°C of nitrided steel.<br>(3) Selection of nitrided structure for tool steel to improve the tool life.<br>(4) Reduction of compound layer on the surface of nitrided compound by hydrogen ion sputtering.<br>(5) Best nitriding condition which increase in tool life by ion nitriding.
