Description

In general a three-dimensional measurement system is established by considering the geometric configuration of the system, such as CCD camera and structured light, etc., because the system measurement is based on the principle of triangulation. Once the configuration has been determined, it must be maintained until the measurements have been completed. The main disadvantage of such systems is the dead-angles that inherently exist in a single image taken from a fixed angle. This paper proposes a new approach to three-dimensional reconstruction of an object shape using multiple silhouette images that are taken from arbitrary random angles. The technique can be realized by utilizing a magnetic sensor that is attached to the CCD camera. The distinctive feature of this system is that it reduces the limitation of the target in terms of size, shape and obstruction, etc. but more importantly it reduces the dead-angle problem of measurement. Experimental results show the feasibility of our system.
