抄録

Series of high manganese non-magnetic steels suitable for structural components of nuclear fusion reactors and magnetic levitating linear motor cars were developed. The physical and mechanical properties and also machinability and weldability are summarized as follows:<br>(1) Type of steels: RM711, 0.7C-15Mn-1Ni steel, is base steel. RM720, 0.7C-15Mn-1Ni-0.6V steel, is modified steel with enhanced strength. RM711F and RM720F are machinability modified steels of RM711 and RM720 respectively. RM711W and RM720W have improved weldability. RM711FW and RM720FW have both properties of good machinability and good weldability. Weld metal of RW811, 0.6C-15Mn-4Ni steel, has also been developed for welding of high manganese non-magnetic steels.<br>(2) Physical properties: Permeability of RM711 and RM720 is smaller than 1.02 even in the weld metal of electron beam welding. The said permeability shows no increase by cold working, and does not increase under high magnetic field up to 7.2MA/m either. Electrical resistivity of RM711 and RM720 is 2 times of carbon steel. Other physical properties such as Young's modulus, thermal expansion coefficient are about the same values with 18-8 stainless steel.<br>(3) RM711, 0.7C-15Mn-1Ni steel, has yield strength over 294MPa (30kg/mm2) in annealed condition. However, hot rolled steel section made of RM711 e.g. L-, H-steel, have yield strength over 343MPa (35kg/mm2). RM720 has yield strength higher than RM711 as much as 98MPa.<br>(4) Machinability: Machinability of RM711F and RM720F is remarkably improved in any type of machining. For example in drilling, tool life of of RM711F is about 100 times longer than that of RM711. Chip breakability of RM711F and RM720F is better than RM711 and RM720.<br>(5) Weldability: Good weldability of RM711FW and RM720FW has been confirmed by electron beam welding, MIG welding and covered arc welding. RW811 has good weld bond properties, low permeability of weld metal and low hot crack sensitivity.
