Abstract
The authors examined the influence of free machining additives in gear hobbing of chromium molybdenum steels with non-coated or TiN-coated HSS tools and obtained the following results.
(1) The free machining additives sulfur, lead and tellurium increase the hob tool life, and sulfur and tellurium are more effective for it than lead.
(2) Calcium is effective for only TiN-coated hob but it is not for non-coated hob.
(3) Surface roughness of machined gear teeth is improved by adding sulfur, lead, tellurium and calcium.
