A study has been made on the effects of grain size on flow stress and reduction in area at elevated temperature of 600 to 900°C and the effects of grain size and warm working conditions on mechanical properties at the room temperature of carbon steels, S45C and S55C.
The results obtained are as follows.
(1) The flow stress and the reduction in area at elevated temperature below Ac1 are influenced by initial grain size, i.e. fine grained steel shows high reduction in area and low flow stress. At higher temperature than Ac3, on the other hand, the effect of initial grain size on these properties are scarcely confirmed.
(2) The steel extruded at 750°C shows the optimum combination of strength and toughness. Furthermore, the mechanical properties at room temperature of this steel extruded at 800 and 850°C are controlled by grain size as warm extruded condition. With refining grain size, mechanical properties like 0.2% proof stress, elongation, reduction in area, and Charpy impact value increase.
(3) To obtain the finer grain in extruded condition, there seems to be a critical initial grain size under which finer grain is attained in extruded condition.
