Description
Separation of the rods and caps of connecting rods by fracture splitting has not been possible with conventional microalloyed steels. The reason is that these steels have too much ductility and the plastic deformation is caused by fracture splitting. The plastic deformation dose not permit accurate rejoining in fabrication of connecting rod. Based on fundamental study about influence of chemical compositions on ductility in MacWorld steels, a new steel composed of 0.35% carbon, 2% Silicon, 0.25% manganese, 0.25% vanadium, and 0.1% phosphorus was developed. The developed steel can perform fracture splitting with minimal distortion. The distortion is smaller than pearlite steel(SAE1070) to which fracture splitting process has been applied. Moreover, fatigue strength and 0.2% proof stress of the developed steel is higher than conventional microalloyed steels.
