1) Observations were made on the changes in serum gastrin in response to administration of a test meal. Measurements of gastrin were made by using the kit manufactured by DAINABOT.
2) Several varieties of test meals were used, including glycine, arginine, hen's egg, or beef extract. These were given to healthy young females (20 to 25 years of age), and it was found that the beef extract caused the highest serum gastrin response.
3) Twenty nine patients whose diagnosis of chronic gastritis had been confirmed by microscopic examination of specimens taken by biopsy from 12 sites in the gastric mucosa and also by endoscopy were used to study the serum gastric response to beef extract. The results obtained were as follows:
1) Patients with severe atrophy of pyloric gland and with a high degree of intestinal metaplasia elicited a low serum gastrin response. The rate of increase in serum gastrin was particularly low in patients with marked atrophy and metaplasia.
2) Patients whose intermediate zone between the pseudopyloric gland area and the oxyntic gland area was high elicited a low rate of increase in serum gastrin following test meal administration, although their fasting serum gastrin levels were quite high.
