In October 1998, a new downy mildew was found on cauliflower [Brassica oleracea L. (Botrytis group)] in Morioka, Japan. The disease spots on lower side of leaves were angular and clearly limited to veins. Conidiophores, emerging from leaf stomata, expanded and adopted a tree-like shape. Conidia formed at the end of the branches were orbicular to ovoid or ellipsoid, measuring 18-26×16-23μm. Conidia germinated, forming a germ tube. The fungus had the same host specificity as downy mildew fungus of cabbage and broccoli. On the basis of these results, the fungus was identified as Peronospora parasitica (Persoon: Fries) Fries. Downy mildew of cauliflower is the name proposed for the disease.
