Abstract

Carotenoid components were studied on the muscle and viscera of hard clam, Meretrix lusoria, in the same way as the authors adopted for short-neck clam. As shown in the Table 4, carotenoid component of hard clam consists of far simpler members than that of shortneck clam, and the tendency is especially emphasized in the muscle.<br> Hard clam contains relatively more lutein than other carotenoids and lacks β-carotene in its muscle, which seem to be distinguishing traits if compared to short-neck clam.
