Description
“Barriology” in tight junction is a concept and term described by Shoichiro Tsukita in research on epithelial barrier, especially in tight junction in epithelial cell sheets. Because the tight junction is the fundamental structure seen in all epithelial cell sheets, it is critically important regulating the microenvironments in our body. It is the 50th anniversary this year of the publication by Farquhar and Padade’s cell-cell adhesion apparatuses in epithelial cells. In this review, we will look back on the history of the cell-cell adhesion system, especially in tight junction, and then look into the future of our research.
