Rectal contents from apparently healthy fattening male dairy calves and fattening pigs in a large geographical area in Japan were examined for the isolation of salmonellae between Aug. and Sept. 1982. Seven (2.46%) of 285 calves and 3 (1.05%) of 285 pigs were proved to be positive for salmonellae with 3 serovars. Six strains of Salmonella serovar typhimurium and 1 strain of S. serovar livingstone from calves, and 1 strain of S. serovar typhimurium and 2 strains of S. serovar derby from pigs were isolated. Except for 1 strain of S. serovar livingstone, all strains harbored at least 2 plasmids. By agarose gel electrophoresis, plasmid patterns of 5 strains of S. serovar typhimurium from calves and 2 strains of S. serovar derby from pigs were identical, respectively, although they were isolated in geographically independent sources. These plasmids, except for Inc Hl R plasmid detected in 1 strain of S. serovar typhimurium from a calf, were stable by the treatment with three-days passage at 43°C, ten-days passage at 37°C, ethidium bromide (1 mg/ml), sodium dodecyl sulfate (10%) and novobiocin (400 μg/ml).
