An experiment was carried out to determine when fluctuations began in peripheral plasma androgen secretion in male dogs. Seventeen linebred male beagles produced at the authors' laboratory were used. They ranged from 12 to 102 weeks of age and were divided into 13 groups of 1 or 2 dogs each (a total of 20 dog-times). Blood samples were taken from the anterior vena brachiocephalica at 2- or 4-hr intervals beginning with 4:00 p.m. In them, androstenedione (A), 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and testosterone (T) were measured by the RIA method. The A value was relatively constant throughout the experimental period. It was below 1ng/ml at 12-24 weeks of age and around 0.1ng/ml at 26 weeks of age. After 28 weeks of age, two patterns of change were observed in the A value. One half of the dogs exhibited a constantly low value of A and the other half a change parallel with the T value, showing a difference of±1ng/ml from this value. The DHT value was around 0.1ng/ml and did not change very much during a period of 12-26 weeks of age. After 28 weeks, however, half of the dogs soon showed the same pattern of A value. The T value was low (1ng/ml) at 12-24 weeks of age, presenting minute variations. Large variations in T value (2ng/ml) were found at 26-30 weeks of age. Predominant irregular daily T value variations (3ng/ml) were observed after 32 weeks of age. Large fluctuations of T value in peripheral blood may have started in male dogs after the rapid growth of the testis around 26 weeks of age.
