Abstract

Conchal cartilage is a widely-used material for autogenous grafting in various clinical situations. Although postoperative complications in the modality are uncommon, late complications of the donor site such as scar formation have been reported in some papers. In this study, we evaluated the clinical courses of 52 donor sites in 45 patients who had undergone conchal cartilage grafting in our department from 1978 to 1997. Two late complications of large scar formations were found. Each scar formation respectively started at the 4th and 16th month after surgery. Histopathological examination revealed collagen fiber hyperplasia and obfuscation of the papillary structure. The collagen fiber had remarkable hyalization and hypertrophy.<BR>There has been no recurrence in either case for 17 years and 10 months and 12 years and 6 months respectively since resection of the scar.
