Abstract

Local injection of OK-432 is a conservative therapy for cystic lesions. One mechanism of this therapy is thought to be tissue adhesion due to inflammatory response after injection.
Recently, this therapy has been the first choice for cystic lymphangioma.
We report the case of a hen-egg-sized plunging ranula treated successfully with OK-432 local injection.
The patient was a 13-year-old girl. Swelling appearedin the left submandibular region starting in April 1999.
The lesion was punctured under local anesthesia and about 25 ml of viscid internal fluid was aspirated with a syringe. Then 10ml of OK-432 solution (0.1 KE/ml) was injected into the cyst.
Five months later, the swelling had disappeared almost completely. No evidence of recurrence was observed during follow-up and no abnormalities were seen in the flow of saliva.
