消化性潰瘍の初期治療では,強力な抗分泌薬であるプロトンポンプ阻害薬(PPI)とH2ブロッカーが,第一選択薬物として広く普及している.両薬物の使い分けの目安は,個々の症例の酸分泌動態と潰瘍の存在部位におかれている.維持療法ではPPIは一般的でなく,主としてH2ブロッカーが選択される. PPIにはヘリコパクター・ピロリ(Hp)菌に対する抗菌作用もみられ,現在内外で注目されているHp除菌療法に欠かせない薬物として高く評価されている.
