When both Bombyx densovirus type 1 (DNV-1) and type 2 (DNV-2) were fed to the larvae of the silkworm, B. mori, the two viruses interfered with each other in the infection of the insect. The degree of interference varied with the relative concentration of the two viruses inoculated. In order to localize the infection with the two viruses in the midgut epithelium, histological sections were performed and processed for immunoperoxidase double staining with different chromogenic substrates. The results revealed that most of the columnar cells were infected with either DNV-1 or DNV-2 and the other columnar cells were doubly infected with the two viruses. These results indicated that there is a mutual interference between the two densonucleosis viruses in the infection of the silkworm at the cellular level as well as at the organism level.
