Description

The effect of the pelleting of feed on the patterns of eating and the rate of feed passage through the digestive tract was determined, using Single Comb White Leghorn male chicks 3 to 7 weeks of age.<br>Although the daily feed intake was not affected by the form of feed it was noted that the time spent eating was significantly decreased and the rate of eating, i.e. the amount of feed eaten per unit of time spent eating, was increased in the birds receiving pellets. It was evident that the birds receiving pellets were at the feed trough more intermittently and ingested a larger amount of feed in a shorter period of pecking when compared those receiving mash. Concomittant to the faster rate of eating, it was observed that the rate of feed passage from the crop to the small intestine is markedly reduced when the birds received pellets. It is thus suggested that the rate of feed passage through the upper segments of the digestive tract may play an important role in determining the eating pattern of chicken under the condition of ad libitum feeding.
