In order to study effects of phytase which converts phytate phosphorus (P) to nonphytate P on performance of broilers, an experiment was conducted. Male broilers at 7 days of age were supplied the experimental diet for 14 days, and apparent ME, nitrogen retention, tibia ash, inorganic P in tibia and plasma were determined at 21 days of age. The basal diet consisted mainly of corn, soybean meal and defatted rice bran, and contained 0.60% total P and 0.30% nonphytate P. To the basal diet, defluorinated phosphate (0, 0.075 and 0.15% as nonphytate P) and microbial phytase (0, 125, 250 and 500 unit phytase/kg of diet) were added. Thirty chicks per dietary group were supplied the diets and water ad libitum for 14 days. As a result, the P equivalency value of phytase was calculated to be 361 units of phytase=1g P as defluorinated phosphate for body weight gain, 411 units for feed intake, 377 units for tibia ash, 350 units for tibia P, and 457 units for plasma inorganic P, respectively. Feed conversion ratio, apparent ME and nitrogen retention were also improved by phytase supplementation.
