Description
In the study, we analyzed circumstances of injury, age distribution and prognosis of 25 cardiac arrest cases caused by commotio cordis. Similar to North American cases (NA), baseballs were the most common causes of impact (10 cases). However, some causes in the study, soccer balls and blunt chest trauma by traffic accidents, were not reported in NA. Also similar to NA, 22 victims were 18 y.o. or younger. Electrocardiograms were recorded in 16 victims. 14 were ventricular fibrillation, 1 ventricular tachycardia, and 1 asystole. 9 victims achieved full recovery, 1 developed permanent brain damage, and 15 died. Defibrillation was delivered in 14 victims, and 8 achieved full recovery. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed by bystanders in all fully recovered victims. These results demonstrated the importance of CPR by bystanders and defibrillation in case of commotio cordis.
