Two experiments were carried out to study on selenium metabolism of laying hen, particularly, on accumulation of selenium in ovarian follicle.<br>Six White Leghorn and six Rhode Island Red pullets of 185-days-old were fed a commercial feed for laying hens containing 0.24mg. selenium per Kg. for 30 days and sacrificed to obtain blood and ovaries. Each ovarian follicle was removed from the ovaries and its weight was measured. Selenium in the sample was determind by the method of OLSON.Activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSHPX) in the plasma was also determind.<br>Levels of selenium in the blood of White Leghorn and Rhode Island Red hens were 0.243 and 0.192μg/ml, respectively. Activity of GSHPX was 37.4 and 21.9 units/mgN, respectively. The blood selenium levels and GSHPX activity of White Leghorn hens were significantly higher than that of Rhode Island Red.<br>Selenium levels of ovarian follicles increased with weight. But, the increase in selenium levels was slightly with wide variation in selenium levels for comparable ovarian follicle weight. Thus, it is considered that selenium level in the ovarian follicles was rather constant throughout in growing period.
