The objective of cold room experiments is to clarify the manner in which the relationship between the compressive viscosity and the snow density depends on the shape of the snow crystals, which comprise snowfall particles, and snow temperature during the process of metamorphism from dry new snow to lightly compacted snow.
The following facts were obtained from the experimental results. The lower the snow temperature and pressure of the snow layer, the more was the time required for the metamorphism from dry new snow to lightly compacted snow. In new snow, the relationship between compressive viscosity and snow density was significantly influenced by the dominant crystal shape of the snowfall particles and the snow temperature.
The compressive viscosity of the new snow that comprised rimed stellar crystals or stellar crystals with a planar external form was greater in general than that of the rimed spatial dendrites and graupels with a spherical external form. Moreover, the degree of dependence of the compressive viscosity on the snow temperature was influenced by the shape of the snow crystals.
