Description

.Glacier distribution maps of the eastern Nepal Himalayas were prepared by means of the interpretation of vertical aerial photographs, which were taken in 1992. Eastern Nepal, in which the Kanchenjunga, Khumbu, Rolwaling, Langtang Himalayas are located, contains wellglacierized areas. The prepared maps revealed that 1024 glaciers exit in eastern Nepal, including 153 debris-covered glaciers. The total area of the glaciers attains 1597 km2, with the total area of the debris-covered surface of 261 km2.<BR>The glacier distribution maps of 1992 and the topographical maps of 1958 were compared for identifying the changes of the individual glaciers. Only reliable data, i.e., 45.4% of the existing 1024 glaciers, were selected and examined. In eastern Nepal 56.8% of the glaciers had retreated from 1958 to 1992, suggesting that the predominant trend in this period was “retreated.” Recent glacier retreat has been most often emphasized in the Himalayas in general. However, the result of this study shows that 34.6% of the glaciers were under stationary conditions and 8.6% were even advanced. This means that, to be more accurate, the general tendency should be regarded not just as “retreated” but as “mostly retreated.”
