Abstract

This paper briefly states the regional characteristics, long variations and probabilitic distribution of the maximum snow depth in Akita district in northwestern Honshu of Japan.The data of maximum snow depth at 15 stations over 80 years were used for statistical analyses.
Maximum snow depth in the Yoneshiro river basin seems to be generated by the different meteorological conditions, but it appears in the Omono river basin with the similar conditions.
The stations separated widely in Akita district were devided into three regional groups by the statistics of the maximum snow depth.
The existence of long-periodic variation of cold winter in Akita district was elucidated, and its swelling peak lies around the age of 1930.
Analyses of return periods showed that the best fit probabilitic method was found to each station. The double exponential prbabilitic method is fit for the coastal area.
A map of 10-year probabilitic distribution was made, and the following equation was conducted between the probabilitic value(Sp)and the mean value(xi)of maximum snow depth.
Sp=exp(a+xi+b)
where, a and b are constants.
