Abstract

Relations between probability occurrence of solid precipitation and ground air temperature for winter precipitation under two types of surface pressure patterns, winter monsoon and extratropical cyclone, were analyzed using data of meterological observatories of Japan. Relations show locality, especially in elevation of observatory as represented by folowing relation;
(winter monsoon type) T50=4.0-0.44·1n (H)
(extratropical cyclone type) T50=2.2-0.21·1n (H)
where T50 is the ground air temperature (°C) corresponding to 50% probability occurrence and H is the elevation of observatory (m).
A possible reason for the observed decrease T50 with elevation, is that precipitation particles are smaller at higher elevations. Observed differences in T50 for winter monsoon type and extratrapical cyclone type are suggested to be attributed to the differences in heat contents or other conditions in upper layers of atmosphere where falling snow particles melt.
Using the results of this analysis, the type of precipitation, either snow or rain, can be forecast more precisely. Also the amount of falling snow which contributes to the development of snow accretion and the amount of additional snow cover can be estimated more reasonably.
